Every now and again, you watch a game of rugby and at the final whistle are left scratching your head at the result, this was one of those matches.
The X-Men were completely dominant in a match that was largely played in the opposition half, wave after wave of attack from the powerful Combe pack who combined to realease the backs at will, spoilt not necessarily by our inability to score but by the resolute Esher defence who to a man were exceptional. They new they were in a tough game and the celebrations at the end of the match indicated that they appreciated that they were on the end of a thumping but somehow bagged a victory.
Our performance although very good could have been better, there were options that weren't taken and a few unforced errors, lapses in concentration allowed Esher 2 early try's and it was an uphill task from there, battling both the slope and the timely Monsoon that had decended on this part of Surrey. All said and done, a very good performance which was exactly what we were looking for this week particularly as the 1st XV coaches were in attendance evaluating our strength in depth and running the rule over a number of 1st XV hopefuls.
Exceptional performances from Mark Deaville, Dave Watkins and Nick Coles ensured we were always going forward whilst Ross Denton was his ever reliable self after a 2 week lay off. Ben Faurie came in at the last minute as our 2 regular scrum halves were not available and showed why he must come to training on Tuesday and Thursdays as his performance was excellent given the lack of match practice, training or even a proper warm up (sat nav's, who need them!!) with some focus, he will only improve and force himself into the 1's/2's reckoning. Jamie Farris once again showed why he will play 1st XV rugby again, out of position but was all over the pitch continually disrupting the Esher attack.
London Scottish at Home next weekend which I'm sure will be the usual humdinger!!
