Thanks to Fraser Thomson Evening – Player & Coach 1980-2009 |
|
On Friday 5th February, 2010 nearly 100 ‘Combe gentlemen gathered in a surprise event to celebrate and thank Fraser for 30 years of service to the club.
Although he is not one for big speeches and has always been most humble with regard to his achievements, many of us felt it right to thank him in the only way we knew how - eat curry, drink too much, sing loudly and talk rubbish all night. However, we added a wee amount of finesse. After speeches from the current President John Ward Turner and past captain Rupert Chitty, Fraser was then presented with a unique Special Edition Club Cap for the years 1980-2009. He was also given a framed replica and Fraser’s ‘All Time Team’, of players he played with or coached over the years, (his wife had gradually extracted these details from Fraser over a 6 month period). This was followed by the highlight of the evening – Fraser’s unplanned response. The night was a fantastic example of all the great and good that is Westcombe Park RFC, and many people contributed to the success of the evening and we thank you all for your help. Some photos from the evening are available on the website.

Westcombe Park Pay the Price for Losing Control |
WESTCOMBE PARK 19 v BARNES R.F.C. 20 Barnes came to Goddington Dene, Orpington and narrowly won the relegation battle in National League Two (South). They dominated the second half to an extent that should have given them more than a single point victory but it was enough to inflict on Westcombe Park their seventh consecutive defeat. Only Rosslyn Park, this week's opponents, Lydney, Worthing and Henley have not beaten Combe this season and we are now in serious need of some wins if this season is not to implode on us and thank God our finest displays have been against the better teams. |

Combe's first match for six weeks is lost but shows promise for the rest of the season |
|
Clifton 14 - 3 Westcombe Park Westcombe Park's first rugby game for six weeks did not get the start that the few travelling Combe supporters would have hoped for Clifton kicked off and after 3 minutes of the match Combe were penalised for an infringement almost on the halfway line but the Clifton goal kicker, fly half John Barnes, slotted the kick to give the home side a 3 nil lead. Following this Clifton put constant pressure on the Combe line and were finally rewarded with a second penalty for another Combe infringement. Once again John Barnes converted the long range penalty to make it six points to nil for the home side. Clifton continued to put relentless pressure on Combe but the Combe defence was resolute and time after time forced Clifton back into their own half. |
