TONBRIDGE/JUDDIANS 16 v WESTCOMBE PARK 27

The scoreline ultimately reflects Combe's superiority in this game but four tries to one masks a brief period, late on, when TJ's were just one point off the pace, and with the momentum.
It also answered some of the questions left hanging in the air after Combe's convincing win at home over Guernsey.
It's not the longest journey to Tonbridge but it is away with a large, vocal support and it might not be Redruth or Lydney but it did not seem to matter to the control Combe maintained over the game for most of its eighty minutes.
A stiff wind quartering across the pitch was also very different, but will have to be dealt with more often as the winter unwinds and was partly the cause of Combe's less than sure handling and that only one of half-a-dozen kicks was successful in the first half.
The first fell to TJ's after twelve minutes having weathered a storming start from Combe. Luke Giles was unlucky when the wind was enough to keep his attempt out and it struck the outside of the post.
We were into the second quarter before Combe struck a decisive blow but it was worth waiting for. A series of breath-taking passes, some astute running and the TJ's defence was in tatters before Trent Nattrass eased his way to the line. The conversion was narrowly missed at the near post.
Six minutes later with the Combe scrum pushing TJ's off the ball Dylan Flashman picked the ball up at the base and strode the few yards to the line for a try quite stunning in its simplicity.
Again the kick was missed from exactly the same spot, by over-compensating this time.
In the last eight minutes of the half TJ's had a series of penalties and those for the posts were all missed, one effort, with the wind in exactly the right quarter, was ambitious in the extreme and fell well short but with the very last effort before half-time Luke Giles was successful to make the score at the break 3—10.
The second half was ten minutes old when Luke Giles doubled TJ's score with another penalty. Another ten minutes elapsed during which TJ's didn't look a side that were only four points adrift mainly due to Combe's superior fitness getting them to the breakdowns earlier and turning the ball over on a regular basis (three things we haven't been able to write for a very long time) and ended with another fine backs move finishing with Ben Hough in the corner. The wind was in the right quarter but Iain Gordon's conversion was quite magnificent.
With about 15 minutes left, the score now 6—17, TJ's finally lit the blue touchpaper. It started innocuously enough with another Luke Giles penalty, but then the full-back, JJ Murray, came into the line, streaked down the wing and rounded enough for Luke Giles to convert TJ's only try.
After a few more minutes Iain Gordan calmly slotted a penalty to extend Combe's lead from the single point to four. In the scheme of things probably the most important event in the whole game.
Some mid-field exchanges were running the clock down and in their desperation to keep the ball alive the rejuvenated TJ's were throwing everything into attack and when the ball popped back up from a breakdown Jordan Davies was the first to react plucking the overhead ball from the air and running from halfway unattended for Combe's fourtuitous (sic) bonus try. Iain Gordon's conversion restored some reality to the scoreline.
A good result for Combe, TJ's beat them twice last year, and generally one played in good spirits though TJ's & Combe had two yellow cards each and there should have been a red, but was behind the referee's back. A game that promises much for the rest of the season.

Combe's Squad: Casey Stone; Kieran Leeper, Trent Nattrass, Ben Hough, Bryan Young; Iain Gordon, Jordan Davies; Reece Conlon, Hamish Barton, James Sheppard; David Watkins, Kyle Coulter; Richard Paddick, Lee Covington, Dylan Flashman. Matthew Poole, John Leiataua, Chris Lewis.
