STAINES R.F.C. 10 v WESTCOMBE PARK 45

On paper with seven tries to one, against a side still in negative points after 22 games, the result seems robust enough and what might be expected from Combe. Staines though considered this one of their better efforts this year.
According to reports Combe took this game too casually and were not adaptive enough expecting something to turn up and not making it happen, and forgot they were a team, which has been their real strength this season, with too much “white-line mania”.
It's difficult to please all of the people all of the time and certainly not what we have seen most of the season, but perhaps saving themselves for the mouth-watering matches against Dorking and Barnes to come.
Another five pointer is good enough and with two tries apiece to Ben Hough and Dale Bellinger plus Kieran Leeper's return to the score-sheet any negativeness will soon be forgotten.
Staines with some fierce tackling and stubborn rugby kept it competitive to the end despite regularly shipping points starting as early as the third minute with a Nick Porter try and conversion from Joe Simpson.
Dale Bellinger got his first try before the first quarter was up but it was in the last minute of the half that Ben Hough got his. With Joe Simpson's conversion Combe took a 19—nil lead into the interval.
Staines made the first move of the second half with a Chris Wells' penalty but it speaks volumes for Combes' strength that in short order Ben Hough with his second and later Kieran Leeper added tries both converted by Joe Simpson to open up a 30-point gap around about the hour mark.
A couple of minutes later and Staines made their only significant move when Sam Hobbins scored their try and Chris Wells converted.
True to what had gone previously it took Combe and Gus Barton and Joe Simpson just a minute to restore the 30-point gap. Not until the last minute did Dale Bellinger get his second try to close out a game that had been won, as expected, almost from the first whistle.
Only four games left but two potential banana-skin games and two top-of-the-table clashes will give room for Combe to spoil a lot of people's Summers! Some negatives from Saturday's game, Luke Giles injured an ankle in the warm-up, Harry Fry has a possible break in the hand while Matt Foulds has a recurrence of an old injury. But Combe have had a comparatively easy run this season with injury perhaps testimony to less rigour at this level and a settled squad has paid dividends.
On Saturday at Goddington Dene in the Kent Cup Combe take on Old Elthamians again (KO 2.30pm) while the Extra 1st XV take on Hammersmith & Fulham in a rescheduled clash (KO 1pm)
Wales v England at 5p.m. (rumour has it on the cabbage patch) so it should be quite a day at Combe as there are only two home games left in Nat. League Three (Lon. & S.E.) a real bonus.

Match Reporter: Mike Attewell (in absentia) with special thanks to a whole host of people, they know who they are.
