Ever since Combe encamped en bloc, it seemed, at Penzance & Newlyn, as they were then, several grades higher than Combe, for a Cup game, a lifetime ago (and gave a very good account of themselves), they have never found the journey to the far west easy.
On Saturday, at the Polson Bridge ground, Launceston gave them a right going over, for their first win of the season so they themselves have made a very indifferent start.
Combe have won once on Cornish soil but on Saturday the try scored by winger Alex Foster, converted by Kieran Leeper, playing at full-back in this game, Combe's only kick for points, in the last minute (every game this season) was the only time they got on the board.
Launceston in contrast were a penalty up after five minutes and then regularly added three tries, the conversions, and another penalty before half time.
It took them a minute of the second half to secure their bonus point and added two more tries, all of them converted, as were the two penalties by winger Kieron Lewitt, before the hour mark.
Launceston didn't add to the two tries scored by back-row Mike Rawlings, the two tries scored by inside-centre Lewis Patterson and the tries scored by lock Will Carrick-Smith and scrum-half Richard Friend in the last quarter, but too say that Combe made a slow start to this game would be stretching a point to destruction!
It is too early to say that Combe travels badly, three out of four away so far, but this result throw an awful lot of doubt on past assumptions this season.
