For the second week running Combe were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat, although at half time the scoreboard suggested it might be a close game. But league newcomers Taunton on their first visit to Goddington Dene had been patient, and were able to up the pace and cruise away to finish convincing winners.
It had rained overnight and with a heavy shower before kick-off, it was slippery on top, as Leeper found when he broke clear in the opening minutes. Taunton opened the scoring on fifteen minutes when Satala made a run, off-loaded, collected again and with Combe missing the tackle glided in for a try, which was not converted. Combe fought back and forced a penalty which was duly kicked by Giles for 3-5. Another shot at goal was missed. Taunton had not found their rhythm or form and were guilty of mistakes and handling errors. Combe would run and chase but could not break through. Another penalty shot fell short. Score at half time 3-5.
Taunton started the second half with an early score from a turnover, and from then onwards always looked
threatening and dangerous. They had the advantage of playing with the ball. Everyone in the home team contributed to the tackle count, but gaps in defence began to open up, or concentration was momentarily lost. Such lapses would be ruthlessly punished. Taunton were running good lines and their support play was superior. Combe battled away but without reward. There were five more tries for the visitors, including one end-to-end effort in the last minute. Final score 3-45.
Next week Combe visit Newbury, who are also struggling at the wrong end of the league table.
