A titanic effort from the lads

Author: Joe Moran (U13s coach)

Westcombe Park’s U13s got their season off to a flying start on Sunday when they took on local rivals Bromley RFC in a friendly fixture.

A raucous crowd witnessed a titanic effort from Combe, who had to dig deep after conceding two early tries from a Bromley side that showed great tenacity and commitment throughout the game.

From the outset, however, the Combe pack dominated the scrum, pushing Bromley back and winning several scrums against the head in an impressive display of power. Forwards Oliver, Dennis, Viliami, and Jack made powerful runs from open play to gain ground and securing possession for Combe, providing an excellent platform for the Combe backline.

Scrum-half Aidan and fly-half Jack were key to a free-flowing attack that saw them spread the ball across the field in waves of attack from the Combe backline.

Outside centre Corran opened the scoring for Combe after a penetrating run from Harrison as Combe moved the ball the width of the field to score in the corner.

Chopping tackles from back-row forwards Dylan and Max and inside centre Harry saw off several waves of Bromley attacks as they repeatedly used their forwards to try and punch holes in the Combe defence.

Under immense pressure from the Combe attack, a Bromley goal-line clearance was collected by wing Sid , who scored from the backfield with a sizzling weaving run past the Bromley defence.

Wing Jacob scored an excellent team try for Combe when Harrison and Corran combined again, with Corran looping Harrison and putting Jacob into space to ground the ball in the corner.

Quick ruck ball enabled full-back Christian to find space on the 10-metre line, who broke free of the Bromley defence and ran half the length of the field to score in the corner.

Combe’s final try of the day also came from Combe’s flying full-back Christian, who scored a sublime solo try after collecting his own try-line clearance kick with a blistering run up the field to touch down in the corner.

Replacements Ben, Harrison, Freddie, Georgie, Sam and Charlie all performed exceptionally well, working hard for the team and making some crunching tackles. An outstanding display of grit and determination left Combe worthy winners in the end. Combe faces a strong Sevenoaks side on Sunday, which will further test their resolve ahead of their cup tie when Bromley return for the first round of the cup in a fortnight’s time.
