Combe ran out clear winners in this local tussle after an opening 20 minutes which produced some scrappy Rugby and no scores. Combe supporters' nerves jangled a bit in that opening period as the scrum creaked, but surprisingly it was a scrum which produced the opening score for scrum half Jacob Buckley. With the first quarter gone, the home team secured quick ball just outside the Sidcup 22, wheeled slightly and an alert Buckley ran in to score his first try for Combe.
10 or so minutes passed when Sidcup secured their only points of the match when Combe were adjudged to have infringed outside their own 22 and the penalty was kicked. Cameron Hancock responded in kind a couple of minutes later when the visitors backs were caught offside.
After the stalemate of the first quarter Combe were starting to edge the game with the midfield defence strong and the forwards winning enough ball for the pace of the home team backs to make big inroads. On the cusp of half time, this interplay between backs and forwards produced Combe's second try. A fine run by returnee Brad Bateup put Combe close to the Sidcup line and, after a couple of thrusts, new team captain Nick Cook drove and scored. The conversion was kicked to make it 15-3 to Westcombe Park at the break.
The game was all but put to bed 5 minutes into the second period. Combe had dominated territory in that 5 minutes and, when Sidcup passed the ball back into their in goal area, centre Matt Harrison was speedy enough to charge down the clearance kick and dot the ball down. With Hancock converting Combe now had clear daylight between themselves and the visitors who were struggling to spark anything behind a strong pack.
Sidcup did have a chance to cross the Combe line after a period of sustained pressure. But good defence in the 10 metre area and a fine turnover penalty frustrated the visitors. This frustration was exacerbated as Combe started to dominate the scrum and the home backs began to go through their paces. An attacking line out brought Combe's bonus point with a catch and drive finished off by lock Hugo McPherson whose try was converted by Hancock. The scoring was finished by replacement Nathan Thomas following another lineout catch and drive and a fine mis-pass which put the Combe man in acres of space.
A fine win for the Goddington Dene side who are getting more into their stride and their next challenge is to win on the road when they go to the seaside this coming Saturday to face Brighton
