There was a pivotal moment at the midpoint of the second half when the visitors had a four to two man advantage in attack and if the score and conversion had been achieved the visors would have taken the lead. Instead the final pass was intercepted and Wimbledon ran the length of the field to increase their lead to 34-21. A penalty and a converted try right on the final whistle added lustre to the scoreline for the home team but Marc Mulhemann had provided some consolation for WPRFC by scoring a fourth and bonus point try.
Westcombe Park had not had an ideal preparation for this tough contest with a raft of players injured but that is the same story around the game as players front up to contact after the lengthy layoff. Facing the top of the table after a patchy performance through September called for a better performance from the Goddington Dene side and this was delivered in a gutsier showing with Combe edging the forwards battle and, despite the scoreline, maintained a good work-rate in defence and kept to their defensive patterns.
The Combe forwards had a good day indeed with new recruit Hugo McPherson claiming a brace on debut, Nick Cook following up his MoM performance from last week with a try and Mulhemann securing that bonus point.
Despite these pluses for the visitors, Wimbledon were worthy of their win, underlined why they lead the league and reminded Combe (as if they needed the reminder) that they will have to be on their mettle in the league.
This Saturday Combe welcome Dorking to Goddington Dene for yet another encounter with old rivals.
