Visitors North Walsham were able to make the lengthy trip back to Norfolk with 5 points safely tucked away after a strong performance at Goddington Dene. Combe struggled valiantly but a resolute defence and a fair degree of attacking nous gave North Walsham a bonus point win. The home-side appeared hampered by injury in a couple of positions but this takes nothing away from the strong showing by the visitors.
North Walsham outscored the Goddington Dene side in both halves. They opened their account within 5 minutes with winger Dan Smith delivering a meaty hand off and then powered over to touch down. Despite good scores from Dan Hamilton and Bryan Young, both converted by Alex Miller, North Walsham were always able to keep their noses in front with a further three tries including one right on the stroke of half time to give them the advantage 26 points to 14 with the Vikings securing a try bonus point
The second half started quietly with both sides probing but showing well marshalled lines of defence. Combe were first to buckle slightly, being caught offside bang in front of their posts and the kick sailed over to make the Goddington Dene's side task that bit tougher. An intercept try on the hour mark further extended the lead for the Vikings. No 8 Dave Pohlen did manage to pinch one back for Combe off the back of a dominant scrum on 66 minutes but the last word was with the Vikings when a break down the line resulted in the visitors scoring their seventh try on the cusp of full-time against a stretched Combe defence.
A tough day on the pitch for the Goddington Dene side confirming that this league is going to be tough not that anyone had thought otherwise. That level of toughness continues next Saturday when Combe renew acquaintance with old rivals Wimbledon at their place.
