WESTCOMBE PARK 14 v BARKING R.F.C. 59

Barking was too strong for Westcombe Park from the outset and had scored two tries in the first seven minutes and added the conversions for a 14—nil lead. Combe were to hit back with two tries of their own and before the end of the first quarter Combe had missed a penalty but were locked 14 all.
The Combe tries scored by centre Nikki Davies who broke through a couple of half tackles and gleefully covered the fifteen or so yards to the line, between the posts, and stand-off Dan Harvey, after a hack on, sandwiched between two defenders outstripped them for the touchdown in the in-goal area just right of the posts and the conversions were straight forward for scrum-half Lee Audis.
From then on it was only one way as far as the scoreboard was concerned. Barking were to run in two more tries in the first half with one conversion and five in the second, including a dubious penalty try, with the points added on all but the last.
Craig Ratford kicked seven conversions for a very sound display with the boot. The tries in the first half were from full-back Chris Jones, and flanker James Ngan. Then prop Andy Le Chevalier and back-row Tony Andrews.
In the second half after thirteen minutes of very spirited back-foot tenacity from the Westcombe Park defence, in short order, No.8 James Kellard scored the fifth try, James Ngan added his second as did Chris Jones.
Then there was a lull while Combe battled away without really ever relieving the pressure from a pack that was beginning to overwhelm them. Following a yellow card the penalty try was awarded and a sweeping move across the width of the pitch gave the winger Scott Shaw Barking’s last try.
Westcombe Park, has, over the last couple of weeks, been regaining their lost confidence and there was nothing much in this match to dent that progress. After all they were up against the League leaders who look like they will be reluctant to surrender that spot!
