Westcombe Park 7-19 Sevenoaks

In what cannot be called a feast of try scoring Rugby, local rivals Sevenoaks won a scrappy match through the accurate place kicking of winger Adams who slotted 4 penalties and 1 conversion to deny Combe even a bonus point with a gap of 12 points between the teams.

The opening quarter was won by Sevenoaks in terms of possession and territory and while the home team's line was rarely under serious threat, it still took 10 minutes before the visitors' half was breached albeit briefly. Both sides saw yellow shortly after this when a high tackle generated some retaliation and both players had to walk. Combe's only highlight was in defence where Matt Harrison took a high ball with aplomb.

Sevenoaks opened the scoring through the left boot of Adams when Combe were caught offside at a ruck. The homeside responded with some style. Matt Harrison clipped the ball down the right for Harry Sansbury to collect and feed prop James McKeown who trundled to the line for the score. Harrison kicked the conversion.

As the half drew to a close Combe pressed through a fine Harrison kick for touch following a high tackle and then a Cassius Deschamps mazy run. However the ball was coughed up on Sevenoaks right and Combe's defence was out of line in attacking mode allowing an easy run in under the posts for the visitors.

Halftime WPRFC 7-10 Sevenoaks RFC

The second half was a tense, scrappy affair with open Rugby at a premium and midfield defences snuffing out any threats. Pressure was mainly on the Goddington Dene side from the off and Sevenoaks slotted the first of 3 penalties after 2 minutes of the half.

Combe were still in with a shout of at least the bonus point but were finding it difficult to get any clean breaks and the game seemed to thunder about around the two 10 metre lines for most of the half. The score was stuck at 13-7 for the visitors until the last 10 minutes when Combe infringed a couple of times under pressure within kicking distance and Adams calmly kicked the goals to give the visitors a valuable win.

Combe have another home game next week against Brighton who have started the season strongly and the Goddington Dene side will be looking at this as an opportunity to get back on the bike as the saying goes.
