This forward dominance provided the backs with a constant stream of possession which they fully exploited. Although Dorking were competitive they made too many errors at the breakdown and could not escape the stranglehold Combe held in the set piece. Dorking’s frustration with the referee, in particular, eventually led to some unseemly exchanges and a plethora of yellow cards.
Combe kicked off from the clubhouse end and were soon on the offensive after Jordan Saunders secured turn-over ball on half way, Frankie Neale kicked a booming penalty to touch near the Dorking line. Combe won the line-out and drove up the middle. A quick tap penalty and Charlie Edwards was away only to be obstructed. From the scrum Combe marched the Dorking pack backwards and the referee awarded Combe a penalty try for wheeling. James Cameron converted, 7-0 Combe. From the re-start Combe pressed again. A fumbled Dorking line-out throw near their own line gave Combe possession and after a tap and go Ben Hennah was through the centre to touch down. James Cameron converted, 14-0 to Combe with just 10 mins on the clock. Dorking recovered from these early setbacks and for a while it was nip and tuck with a lot of positional kicking. However, on the 20 min mark Combe turned-over a ball near the Dorking 22m line, then moved it left. Dorking missed a couple of tackles and Jimi Stanford galloped over by the posts. James Cameron converted, 21-0. Combe then took their foot off the pedal and Dorking fought back, having the better of the possession and territory during the second quarter. However, they could not gain any real traction due to their own mistakes and Combe’s committed defence and scrum dominance. As half-time approached, James Cameron slotted a penalty after a Dorking infringement following a Combe line-out and drive, 24-0. Dorking responded immediately from the re-start and from a turn-over fly half Matt Noble kicked cleverly to the corner. Dorking’s winger Cameron Osborne won the foot race and scored wide out. Matt Noble converted, 24-7 at half-time.
Combe started the second half like they started the first – on the offensive. From a line-out on half way Tom Clarke made a barnstorming run down the middle but Combe infringed 10m from the Dorking line. At the ensuing scrum Dorking were shunted off their own ball and Alex Campbell picked up and scored. James Cameron converted, 31-7 with bonus points in the bag. Time for the backs to get onto the score sheet. Bradley Saffery was over in the corner after the ball was spun wide following another advancing Combe scrum. James Cameron converted, 38-7 with 50 mins on the clock. After a Shaun Dixon tackle and turn-over in midfield, it was Tommy Gray’s turn with a clever kick and chase, touching down between the posts. James Cameron converted, 45-7 after 55mins. Dorking were getting increasingly frustrated and tempers began to fray. However, they won a penalty and kicked to touch. From the line-out they caught and drove, then spun the ball wide and Michael Terelak touched down in the corner for a consolation try. 47-12 with 20 mins to go. Tempers flared once again and there were an increasing number of nasty incidents both on and off the ball. Yellow cards were flying everywhere. Combe composed themselves the better of the two sides and there were late tries for Ant Hitchcock and Bradley Bateup. Both were converted by James Cameron, 59-12 to Combe. There was still time for one last Dorking response. They took a quick penalty and ran out of defence and a combination of slick running and poor tackling took them to the Combe line only to be thwarted by a superb Bradley Bateup covering tackle. Game over.
Combe move up to 4th place in the league, just 2 points behind leaders Hertford and second placed Wimbledon, whom they play next Saturday at Wimbledon.
Combe DoR Steve Wagstaff said "We had prepared for this match the same as we prepare for every match. We worked our socks off all week and had worked on a game plan which the players executed brilliantly and with devastating effect. We exploited the oppositions weaknesses and came away with 5 league points which was our target. Dorking are an excellent side with a great bunch of lads and this will be merely a road bump as they recover from relegation and come to terms with bedding in a lot of new players and life back in Nat 3."
