4 try's from Skipper Nick Cook and a Raf Dutta hat-trick helped make sure that Westcombe Park put the rather up and down nature of their record since Christmas behind them. This emphatic victory, as well as results elsewhere, put the Goddington Dene side within touching distance of winning the league with 3 games left.
Stags started the match brightly scoring wide on the left after 5 minutes but Combe responded through the returning Rob White 4 minutes later. This was the first in a set of 4 tries in the opening quarter as Sam Rhodes made the most of a Jacob Buckley off-load, Joe Ratcliff scoring under the posts after hooker Michael Dunnett had burst through and linked with KK Orelaja and Nick Cook finishing off a line-out won via a fine 50/22 kick.
CS Stags fired another shot of their own after 21 minutes with a finely worked try out on the right. After a breathless first quarter with the referee allowing a free flowing game, the score stood at 26-10 to the visitors. Combe notched a couple of additional tries in the remainder of the first half. Orelaja making the most of pressure he created himself after touching the ball in flight and forcing the ball to be spilled to score under the posts. Cook then scored his second of the afternoon again going over from the back of a driving maul. In the meantime Jacob Buckley had kicked 5 out of 6 conversions to make the score 40-10 to Combe at half time.
The home side now had both the wind and slight slope in their favour but could little headway against a now rampant Combe side. Stags stuck hard at their defensive chores with hooker Morgan Davis putting in an impressive tackling stint. Westcombe Park scored a further seven tries in the second period with Nick Cook contributing two to raise his total to four for the match and fellow back-rower Dutta scoring a second half hat-trick as the pack exerted a high level of pressure and execution at scrum and mauls.
The backs also got in on the act with a Bradley Bateup run putting Orelaja in for his second of the game and Ratcliff adding a second to his first half score. Buckley added a further conversion to his tally and full-back Toby Wallace slotted three after taking on the kicking duties.
Combe are now a couple of tries short of hitting a century this season and this performance showed their attacking prowess when they get the bit between their teeth. Down to Tunbridge Wells this Saturday for the re-arranged fixture against old rivals TWs.
