The Westcombe Park Wolves (Under 7s) took part in the Blackheath Minis Festival.

The Westcombe Park Wolves (Under 7s) took part in the Blackheath Minis Festival at Eltham College on Sunday, entering two teams comprising all eligible players into both the A and B team competitions.

Having taken part in the Foxbury Festival the week previously, the players had had their first chance this season to put into practice the skills they had learned over the past year, and it became evident that the practice had paid off with consecutive festivals.

All players applied themselves superbly. The B team were pitted against Medway, Tonbridge Juddians, Blackheath and a determined Sevenoaks side. They played very well, finding their scoring touch and, although they did not make it out of the group, they all returned home proudly sporting their medals and satisfied with some excellent passages of play. Frank Kitchen won a well deserved Mars Bar as the team's top try scorer.

The A team had somewhat different fortunes. They started with a 5-3 victory over Medway, followed by an end to end match ending with a hard fought 6-4 win over Southend. By the end of that second game, the passing and lines had already improved and the defence was tight. The third match was a keenly anticipated encounter with the hosts, with a 4-1 win for the Wolves. The final round robin game result against Old Colfeians was 7-0, more a reflection of the evolving quality of play of the Wolves than of the opposition. The team supported Hayden Thompson and Matthew Chick to score 3 and 4 tries respectively, and this was the only game in which Louis Parker did not score a try.

By the end of the pool stage, with the coach rapidly running out of superlatives with which to urge the players on and having won all four pool games, the team reached the final, where they came up against Tunbridge Wells. It took patience to break down the disciplined Tunbridge Wells side, but a try on the stroke of half time was a sign of what was to come, with the final result standing at 3-1 to the Wolves.

Parents and coaches watched with incredible pride as Matthew Chick led the team to lift the trophy, and this is a victory that will live long in the memory.

Players from both teams will be back together at Goddington Dene next week for more practice and to build on what they have all achieved.
