Westcombe Park RFC 38-24 Havant RFC

John Vallely6 Oct - 08:55

Combe new boy Brown delivers the Win

Westcombe Park had struggled to close out games in recent weeks but dominance at the gain line and a new stand-off in Max Brown got the home side over the line. Brown was deservedly made player of the match.

Combe had led as early as the second minute when Havant saw yellow and a quick tap penalty put effervescent scrum half in for the first try which was converted by new stand-off Max Brown. The home side went further ahead converting a fair amount of pressure at the breakdown into points when Davies got his second from good line-out ball. Brown added the conversion.

After 20 minutes, Havant got on the score board when a neat kick ahead from the impressive No 8 DylandRead was seized upon by Will Perry for the score which was converted by Reuben Knight. Brown then converted a penalty when Havant were pinged for killing the ball at a ruck.

Combe secured their third try when Namir Kahlil scored in the corner after the home side had pushed Havant off their own ball at scrum time. Brown’s third conversion in blustery conditions made it 24-7 at the half.

Westcombe Park had the wind advantage in the second period and it only took 5 minutes for them to move further ahead, Tom Burman whizzing through a gap to score under the posts for the bonus point try. The visitors got one back when Perry got his second and an under pressure Westcombe Park were coughing up penalties and yellow cards all around the park.

Just short of the hour mark it looked as if Havant would score but the ball was turned over close to the Combe line and Davies ran the length of the pitch to complete his hat-trick making it 38-12. Havant refused to lie down and an excellently executed backs’ move put James Wise in for the try and in the dying moments of the game Will Saunders struck Havant’s fourth for their bonus point try.

A good win for the home side after the trials and tribulations of recent weeks and Combe move up the league before their trip to Bury St Edmunds this coming Saturday.
