Fombo Hat-trick does the Job

A spirited Barnes fightback was not quite enough to take the win from Combe who had been inspired by a quick-fire Sam Fombo first half hat-trick.

Fombo had bullied his way over the line for Combe’s first score and Max Brown hit the first of his 5 successful kicks. Fombo got his second just before the half hour touching down after a good catch and drive. In a game littered with penalties, it was a combination of Combe’s hard tackling and a dominant scrum that kept the pressure on the visitors.

Another solid drive from the Combe pack delivered Combe’s third try again from a line-out, hooker Callum Harris touching down. Fombo secured his hat-trick and Combe’s bonus point try when the pack rumbled over the Barnes’ line to make it 26-0 at the break. A dominant performance from the Goddington Dene side but previous games against Barnes all pointed at a strong chance of a comeback from the visitors.

However, it was Combe who stretched further ahead when Nick Cook touched down after a switch drive at the lineout and the Brown conversion seemed to have put the match out of sight at 33-0. But a combination of Barnes resilience and Combe indiscipline made it the usual nerve tingling experience for the home support. Henry Joseph got a couple for the visitors picking up loose ball for his first and taking a great line from a Barnes scrum to score his second. A Brown penalty when Barnes were pinged for off-side in front of the posts pushed the score to 36-14 but Barnes kept plugging away.

Combe’s discipline then went astray under continuous Barnes pressure and, when the home side were reduced to 12 players, Barnes' Oliver Walker and Jacques Birch crossed the line the latter score being blessed with a fine step to outfox the outnumbered defence. Three conversions from Harvey brought Barnes within touching distance at 36-26 but in the the visitors had to be content with the try bonus point.

Next week-end Combe are away to Henley Hawks who will offer their usual stiff resistance at home.
