Offloading game to the fore as Combe triumph

A quick fire first half- half trick from joint player of the match Ben Fryatt laid the foundation for a convincing home win for Combe. The performance was a big improvement from the previous week helping the side bounce back from a loss to London Welsh.

The start however wasn’t what Combe were looking for; a missed tackle when the game was hardly underway let Guernsey’s Anthony Armstrong in on the left for the first score. But Combe countered quickly when Max Brown scored out wide after red zone pressure from Combe forwards and backs. Brown converted to make it 7-5. The home side went further ahead when centre Ryan Jones ran in when the ball was spun wide following a strike against the head in the scrum and Brown hit his second conversion. Charlie Simmonds got one back for the visitors before a grubber kick was collected by Ben Fryatt for his first try again converted by Brown

An interception by Guernsey’s Callum Rogers made it 21-15 in a close battle but a couple of offloads from the slick hands of joint player of the match Naj Mundichee produced a second try for Fryatt. But the Warriors showed a fair degree of resilience and came back, Tom Yarwood taking advantage of broken play in midfield to score and Charlie Simmonds converted.

Combe and Fryatt had the last word in a frenetic half when Combe’s offloading game again broke the visitors’ defence for Fryatt to score under the posts.

The second period was quieter with Guernsey held scoreless, but Combe notched further tries from winger Jack Aungier following some meaty carries by Combe’s heavy artillery in the Guernsey 22 and Harry Hudson sliding over for a try as the game petered out. Try bonus points for both teams underlined the attacking effort on show.

Combe visit West London next week for an encounter with perennial rivals Barnes with a close game in store.
