London Welsh showed just how much they have learned on their return to National League rugby with a flurry of first half tries which left the visitors struggling to get anything out of this match.
Combe did have the early pressure though and after Max Brown had missed an early penalty attempt, he was successful with a second shot on 5 minutes. Then it was all London Welsh as their midfield got a firm grip on the game. Daffyd Manley notched the first after a couple of hefty thrusts deep in the Combe 22 and just before the end of the first quarter Adam Dunne finished off a nice move from an attacking scrum. A successful Exiles penalty when Combe were caught offside extended the lead to 17-3 on 25 minutes.
Combe were down a player as a result of a deliberate knock on and the hosts took advantage in the last minutes of the half. Hywel Williams exposing a gap at the edge of the ruck and Ellis Staines touching down for the home side’s bonus point try. Matt Hodgson had been 100% from the tee to put London Welsh in a commanding 31-3 lead.
But Combe showed a bit a steel in the second period. London Welsh went down to thirteen players and the visitors got within touching distance of bonus point territory with tries from wingers Jack Aungier and Kieran Thompson as well as half -back Mikel Davies. Any slight hope was quashed by another Exiles penalty kicked by the reliable Hodgson and the home team dominance was signed off with a last minute try by Andrew Black.
Guernsey visit Goddington Dene next week-end with Combe looking to get back to winning ways.
