If it wasn’t obvious that the “breezy” conditions would make things challenging before the game then it soon became clear that they would when the OEs kick off skewed sideways into touch! Max R then made a decent run through the middle reaching the 22 yard line before being manhandled into touch on the left. Ralph soon got his first of the day gliding in impressively from a full 40 yards out on the right wing past the flailing defensive cover. Shortly after Matthew put through a low skidding kick that bounced up kindly to Hayden on the left and he gathered well and burst over the line to take the first half 2-0. In the second period Coombe continued to benefit from a good solid forward platform winning rucks and pressing well with Toby in particular putting in some decent tackles. Matthew then broke through the lines somewhat sheepishly but the “try” was disallowed. Henry made a couple of typical bustling runs - one of which nearly made the line - before Ralph added his second powering through a couple of half tackles from just inside the 22 after picking up the ball off the deck when a looped pass caught the wind and went behind him. OEs then came into the game with some sustained attacking and although Coombe defended well on their try line across both flanks the away side eventually got their reward on the left when a good move ended with a try from 5 yards out despite a last ditch tackle from Christopher. It wasn’t long before normal service was resumed as first Ralph was fed by Matthew on the right to glide home for his third score of the day and then Hayden scored his second and Wolves’ 5th as he sprinted home in textbook style from 20 yards out.
Westcombe Park Blues 4 OEs 2
Match two was very scrappy initially which was understandable as the wind now seemed to be almost horizontal! In the first 10 minutes OEs had all the territory but couldn’t get over the line with some good scrummaging and rucking from Coombe holding them at bay. Alphie and Adem both each then made a couple of typically bulldozing bursts and another forward Dylan even managed a dummy on one of his runs through the middle! This was turning into a good scrap with Tommy Hill, Oscar and William Reeves all buzzing around effectively. Tommy Hill then broke the deadlock when he peeled off down the right blindside with an angled run to the line. Adem then powered in well to score from 10 yards out before Ollie made a good run and then offloading in the tackle to Tom Cahill in good support on the line for Wolves’ 3rd score. OEs’ big lad then ran through from 20 yards with a good score to make it 3-1 before Tommy Hill took a catch from his own kick which nearly forced a score from Oscar who was inches away! Ollie then charged down a panicked OEs kick on their own line for the fourth and there was a further decent attack which came from good passing from both of the William’s in the middle. Their big lad then ran through for a consolation and his second to make it 4-2!
Well done to all the boys. In ridiculous conditions they put on a great spectacle and won!
