Sleepy Wolves A Lose out 3-2 to Old Colfeian’s by Tom Barrett and B Team Report by Mike Haynes
On a frustrating day this Wolves team failed to get out of first gear.
On the day that the clocks went back Wolves A's looked strangely out of sorts despite an extra hour's rest following the half term break. When the game kicked off Old Colfeians came strongly out of the traps and it was very early on when their diminutive winger sped down the midfield right to find an ocean of space in front of him and a lack of defensive cover or any sign of a tackle from a sleeping Wolves backline to score with ease. The Wolves then tried to gain some territory but more often than not the ball carrier would gain a few yards and either hold on to the ball for way too long or become isolated with nobody in support for a pass to or to help recycle the ball back in rucks or mauls. OC's soon took advantage as they deservedly ran in a second score from close in to lead 2-0.
After a bit of a rollicking from the coaches The Wolves managed to restore parity late on with Henry B scoring well twice from close range by driving in low and evading some last ditch OC tackling but this could not disguise some sloppy general play and although The Wolves were finally attempting to move the ball they rarely put more than 2 or 3 passes together due to a combination of poor passing or avoidable handling errors with Christopher being one of a few repeat offenders (no pocket money for him his week!).
As if to prove that we can all have an off day the OC's ref appeared to miss (cough cough) a perfectly good finish by Henry B for his hattrick as he seemed harshly adjudged to have strayed into touch despite looking to be a few yards inside the line although a win would have masked a bad day at the office from a disjointed Wolves. As if to underline this The Wolves then failed to pick up easy ball from the base of a ruck allowing OC's to push them back and win turnover ball and the home team then broke through another static Wolves defence to take the game 3-2. It is to their credit that The Wolves were still in with a sniff of winning the game at the close but there is plenty to build on for the remainder of the season.
Well done The Wolves and apologies if I missed any key moments out!
B Team Report by Mike Haynes
The B's were bolstered by Ethan, Charlie and Max Walton this week but the overall squad performance was much improved against Old Colfeians B's.
Straight away it was clear the boys had learnt from their lessons a few weeks ago, going 3-0 up in the first few minutes, James Heffernan making the most of some weak tackling to get over the line, also showing some good awareness to put Charlie and Noah into space for the next scores.
The first half also saw some powerful running from Alfie, Ethan, Max Walton and Dylan, the latter with a powerful charge up the middle which gave him his first try for the club. After scoring, we did lose our concentration a few times, which gave the home side two tries but Combes better rucking and handling meant the first half finished 4-2.
A few changes at half time gave us a bit more momentum, Thierryon helping himself to a couple of tries in the first 5 minutes, Alex nicking a try with an aggressive rip and steal on Colfes try line, Ralph also adding two tries to the scoreboard with some elusive running as did James Henderson with his first try for Combe. Kit and Jonathan both carrying strongly when given the opportunity, Ryan and Harry also putting in good shifts at 9 in each half, Max Rush again playing well at 10.
Moment of the match for me was Thierryon breaking through and selflessly offloading on the try line to give Hendo his second score of the day.
All in all, a pleasing afternoon, especially for the coaches, the boys working hard to improve on weaknesses in their game from their last outing in a much better squad performance.
Well done lads and apologies for anybody I've missed out, Ocado, thanks for reffing mate.
