Falcons overcome cold to win

Sunday 10th November 2017.
Tonbridge Juddians 14 - 39 WPRFC The Falcons
The morning of the match we were all greeted by sleet and snow and the cheerful pessimist thought that the game must surely be off, as sleds and huskies went in the opposite direction it was somewhat bemusing to arrive in a snow free Tonbridge, albeit it raining and mightily cold.
The match starts and the pack get to work, early exchanges and the oxymoron description elegant violence comes to mind as the two sides size each other up like a pair of boxers at the beginning of a bout. Max Hallett kicks through and Harry Shotton is off in pursuit, tackle is made. Centre ground battle and two scrums, Mike Tutt spins out a long pass to Karim who scores near the corner and Dan O’Neill kicks a superb conversion. 0-7.
The restart and the falcons aren’t on it, it’s scrappy and TJ’s are turning us over, missed tackles in the centre area by pack members and TJ’s are through and score under the posts & convert. 7-7.
The restart and handling errors from both sides, cold hands, conditions are not great, but yet again missed tackles from the pack and TJ’s break the gain line and go through a gap and score again & convert. 14-7.
The restart is better, better play, great hands considering the conditions, the falcons up the physical at the coal face and Sam Nicholls takes a good pass and goes over. Conversion missed. 14-12
Much better from the Falcons, clearing out TJ’s who are now on the back foot, the Falcons are playing well and a well executed team try is scored by Max Sanger. Conversion missed. 14-17.
In the next phase a tremendous return by Harry Shotton deep into the opposition half and he sends a wonderful pass to Karim who shimmy’s and moves & scores his second try. Top work. Conversion missed. 14-22 HALF TIME.
It’s a tad cold, and your reporter wonders why Apple don’t make heated pens.
The second half commences and the falcons get the ball out wide, Max Sanger is tackled and the forwards pile in, the balls out quicker to Harvey Aris who goes wide and TJ’s aren’t stopping him, it’s a good try, tough conversion from out wide is missed. 14-27
TJ’s want to get back into the game and the falcons aren’t going to let that happen. The falcons have a scrum near the opposition try line, good work from Henry Jones and Harvey Aris takes the ball at pace and is over the whitewash for his second try. Conversion missed. 14-32.
It’s time for some forwards power and the packs getting to work, good support, taking small gains with each advance, the packs on their try line and Rob D picks and goes over, Ben had grounded the ball for a try, but pushed it back and presented it for Rob to pick & go, next time Ben!
Conversion is made. 14-39.
Full time, tough conditions, but a wins a win and shut out the opposition in the second half.
Karim x 2
Harvey Aris x 2
Dan O’Neill: 1 from 1
Max Hallett: 1 from 5
Mike Tutt: 0 from 1
Notes for Mr Brelsford: Oxymoron is neither in the periodic table or how Cambridge graduates describe graduates from Oxford. See if you can spot the other oxymoron above.
