HURRICANES Bs AT UPMINSTER FESTIVAL

After some strong performances in recent weeks at fixtures home and away, we were looking forward to a competitive and challenging festival over at Upminster. Unfortunately the squad was somewhat depleted, with injuries largely to blame, but we had 12 enthusiastic lads raring to go. A big thank you to George Hunt, originally selected for the A's but happy to help out after withdrawals in the week. George was our captain and led by example.

The first match against Hertford got off to a great start with Henry rampaging through to put us into the lead. We were winning scrums against the head and working hard, but Hartford came back before halftime to score an equaliser, despite valiant efforts on the line. In the second half we again had a couple of good chances, but Herford got us on the break. A 2-1 defeat was harsh.

Game 2 was against a very strong Sevenoaks team. Overall we matched them in lots of areas but got caught with a couple of breakaway tries and an interception, as well as some flowing passing moves. A defeat was a fair result, but 5-nil was again a bit harsh.

The hosts, Upminster, were next and we got the perfect start when Henry collected Sam's kick-off on the bounce and powered through for another trademark try. The lads stayed on top for much of the match but midway through the 2nd half conceded an equaliser. 1-1 was the final score, at least we were off the mark!

Our final game was against Westcliff, and with a chance of qualifying for a final gone, we were playing for pride, against a strong team. Again, for large parts of the match we matched them, but again, strong running and passing by the opposition did for us, as we ended with a 3-0 defeat.

Despite results not going our way, Mike and I were proud of the effort the lads put in and the manner in which they represented themselves and the Club.
