‘Combe’s first warm up game vs Sevenoaks – more to come……

Nearly 200 people turned up to watch both old rival clubs play their first warm up games as we all prepare for new laws and a new season. Having had the services of Roy Maybank during the week meant that ‘Combe’s players had already received a full briefing of the new scrummage and tackle laws. It’s great to watch a referee of such a high standard combine with our coaching staff to deliver conditioned games to prepare us for 2017/18.

A bright and blustery August afternoon saw ‘Combe welcome our visitors to the affectionately named “swamp” pitch, due to the Cricket being in full swing. We are so pleased that Sevenoaks made the trip up the road and that we could both help each other out. We wish them the very best of success for the coming season.

Four quarters of 25 minutes lay ahead, with a very hotly contested first quarter from both teams, tries being scored by both teams, but Combe coming out the victors, despite a pulled hamstring from James Cameron.

Quarter two, like the first, was again, a fierce contest, with both teams again putting together some great rugby and scoring, with the pick of the tries going to a link up between Bunn and Ludlow, ‘Combe again taking the Quarter.

Quarter three saw many of ‘Combe’s youngsters take on many players with far more experience, and despite a few Sevenoaks tries, ‘Combe never gave up and learnt a lot from the experience.

The fourth quarter saw two similar sides from the first quarter, and again, both sides threw everything at each other. ‘Combe’s indiscipline, coupled with a cut eye to Ant Hitchcock, saw Sevenoaks put together some great Rugby to take the Quarter. Jamie Forsyth setting up a maul to crash over in the corner was a particular highlight.

An exciting first outing for ‘Combe, with players still to come back from holiday that gave our coaches , Danny, Gareth and Simon the chance to see how our senior sides will begin to shape up ahead of our first league games in September.

Next week sees our 1st team squad take on Thurrock away so it would be good to see you at 2pm in Essex for the kick off. The week after is a massive ‘Combe day on the 26th as we welcome everyone to watch our final senior squad games vs Canterbury at 3pm plus the Nomads take on Thurrock 3rds a little earlier. This will be one of the best social days of the season and the chance for the whole ‘Combe family come and support all our lads.

Thanks so much to everyone for all your hard work and support - One Club – One Combe!
