Combe Colts saw off their season with a hard fought victory over visiting U20 Argentine side Chacros De Corea. With a large 27 man squad with constant rolling changes being made, the end result was a good one.
Chacros were a good side with incredible strength and skill coupled with speed and agility thrown in. But from the kick off Combe drew early blood as Rory Tanner
did his stuff and scythed through the Argentine defence for a 5 pointer just wide of the uprights thatMatt Holmes made 7.
It took another 25 minutes and some ferocious tackling along the way before Mike Halstead secured a further five to provide Combe with a short lived cushion before Chacros secured 5 of their own before the half way point and a narrow converted try lead held by the Colts.
The second half saw Chacros carry on where they left off and piled on 3 back to back tries one of which was converted, that took them to a comfortable 12 - 22 lead with roughly 20 left on the clock.
This was where the Colts held their nerve and showed their metal as they fought their way back, camping themselves in the Argentine half for the bulk of the remaining period before Harvey Young
broke through with a deft step to pop down under the posts for a self converted try and just a 2 point defecit.
Not long after, Louis Wilson
slid over following some lovely work through the backs that set up the opportunity for him to take the lead once more and with the momentum in Combe's favour, the victory looked secure with a five point cushion. But before the final whistle Colts debutant Mark Wratten was the first to arrive at a loose ball that shot out of a breakdown over the Argentine try line that he popped down for 5 and duly converted himself to secure a memorable 31-22 victory.
Played in superb spirit and admirably officiated as always by Mr Maybank, the game was an example of international sports being respected by all and clearly demonstrated by the 50 man squad shot at the end as both teams grouped up for a well earned and memorable impromptu team picture. Great season, great opponents, superb rugby, excellent entertainment and something we hope we can repeat in the future, maybe on an annual basis. Club was packed and the support was superb. Thanks to all concerned. Enjoy your few weeks off. It all starts again soon enough.
