Local rivals Combe and TJs provided an eleven try festival to close the season in style. And the Combe’ supporters in the largest crowd of the season were that wee bit happier with a second half performance that garnered five tries and a bonus point win.

The visitors led at halftime from a well worked lineout move after 8 minutes, Centre Luke Talbot dotting down, Thomas White kicking the conversion. Hooker Will Holling then extended the lead with a score at the back of a powerful line out drive and White kicked his second conversion.

Combe wing Kieran Thompson hit back for the home side with a mazy run through the TJs defence and Nathan Wyman hit the first of his 6 successful conversions. A TJs penalty which hit the post meant the sides went in at a closeish 7-14 at half time.

TJs wing Guy Rogers scored early in the second half with a clean strike down the right to edge the visitors further ahead. Player of the match Joshua-Daniel Smith was prominent in the loose, bursting the gain line with several strong carries. The front foot possession this delivered gave the platform for Combe back rowers Harry Hudson and Nick Cook to hit back quickly with a couple of tries which were converted by Wyman to give Combe the lead for the first time.

Holling regained the lead for the visitors with his second try, again at the back of a rolling maul but the tit for tat continued when Combe went ahead with a a Wyman-Gould -Dutta combination with Raf Dutta completing the move. Wyman converted. On 61 minutes Matt Harrison intercepted on the halfway line and with the conversion Combe had a bit of daylight which increased when flanker Fergus Chawner pounced on loose ball in the middle of the pitch to run in virtually untouched. Wyman’s sixth conversion made it 42-31 and duly registered a 100% performance from the tee for the stand-off.

The last word in a pulsating game belonged to TJs with Rogers getting his second try of the contest running a great line from an attacking lineout.

A wonderful advert for the quality of this league with Westcombe Park’s powerful carries in the second half earning the victory. So an exceptionally successful season ends for the Goddington Dene side who sit in 9th place in the league. A good memory to savour for the summer before season 24/25 rolls round.
